Board games are constantly becoming more and more popular. With the thousands of games available to choose from it can be quiet a task deciding which game is going to be suitable for a beginner.
The market is currently full of all kinds of board and card games. There are games based on TV shows and movies, world domination games, games based on novels and so many more to choose from, it can be a hard task deciding which game is right for you.
But there are some games that stand out from the crowd as being simple to learn and yet will give many many hours of enjoyment to you, and sometimes, to the whole family. This is by no means an extensive list, and I”m sure there will be games out there that deserve to be on this list, however this is based on personal experience of games that I have played or watched being played. I wouldn’t want to tell people how good a game is if I have never played it, that would just be wrong.
Ticket to ride
Ticket to ride was first published in 2004 by Days of wonder. It is suitable for players age 8+ and is a 2 – 5 player games. Over the years it has won plenty of awards, and is a great game for all the family to enjoy.
The aim of the game is earn as many points as possible by placing your coloured trains on routes across a map of America. The bigger the routes you complete, the more points you score at the end of the game.
Another great game for beginners is Carcassonne. In Carcassonne, each player takes it it turns to select a tile from a pile and place it on the board, adjoined to an existing tiles.
They can then choose whether to place one of their meeples on the tile to try and score points.
Again this is a great game for all the family as it has a minimum age of 8+. The only complicated part of this game is working out the points for the farmers at the end of the game, however after a couple of games it gets much easier.
Settlers of Catan
This is one of the most popular board games ever. Although it”s not quiet as easy as the previous games mentioned, it is still a great game for beginners to learn as it is far less complex than a lot of the other board games out there. In Settlers of Catan, the aim of the game is to score 10 points. Points are scored by constructing buildings built with resources that are gathered throughout the game.
As i mentioned earlier, this is only a brief list however I feel these games would make a great starting point for anybody that was interested in starting playing board games for the first time.
